
Organizations with more than 10,000 named users need an unlimited license. Organizations this large are typically very dispersed and may use multiple front-ends, fail-over, redundancy, etc. For example, the primary web farm may be in Atlanta with a European web farm in Scotland. Atlanta’s may be backed up by one in Silicon Valley and Scotland’s may be backed up by one in England. Both primaries would automatically replicate their back-end transactions to the secondary site. Organizations this large may have need for several installations of the Status Reporting Tool in such a scenario. The transaction load suggests that a robust enterprise database be used to accommodate the magnitude of transactions and the need to mine the data.

The Status Reporting Tool is built to reside on a scalable architecture; i.e. load balanced front-end web servers and an Oracle back-end. (Note: the Status Reporting Tool has been tested with Oracle 10.2.0.1.) Unlimited licenses come with both the binary version for immediate deployment and the source code. You may make changes to the code base, such as integrating it into your intranet, but you may not resell it. You will receive 30-days of online (i.e. online chat or e-mail) and phone support. You will need your own Java Servlet container, such as Tomcat. (Note: as of this time, Tomcat is the only container tested and certified.) You’ll want to keep your data behind your firewall, so an intranet address fire walled from the internet is highly desirable. A virtual private network (VPN) is not required unless you wish to access your Status Reports from outside the company’s firewall. It is entirely possible to run the Status Reporting Tool on the internet (e.g. http://www.yourcompany.com/). We highly recommend that if you do so, you use a separate HTTP listener such as Apache in front of Tomcat and secure it with self-signed certificates at a minimum (i.e. use the Secure Socket Layer (SSL) to encrypt all traffic). The reason we suggest Apache is that you can configure it to not respond to the HTTP_TRACE command. As your concurrent user access grows, you may wish to use more than one web server. This is permissible with any license. We highly encourage you to consider, but do not require, a separate server for your database. The use of a separate server allows you to partition it off from the inter/intranet and gives you a little more protection from hackers. Due to the large nature of your organization, you’ll need an experienced database administrator and possibly a web master (or several if you are geographically dispersed).
Large organizations should include onsite consulting as a means of minimizing the disruption to their services.
